Ranchi was once the summer capital of Bihar now the capital of Jharkhand…but always a winner.

Marginally cooler than the plains surrounding it, Ranchi is set on a plateau at about 700m above sea level.  There are some absolutely stunning waterfalls in the area and along with Betla National park they give you a great reason to visit Ranchi.

Ranchi is the capital of the rather new state of Jharkhand.  Stunningly beautiful it is situated in a region that is rich in natural beauty covering waterfalls, hills, and veritable green valleys.  The attractions here are of great historical importance - couple that with the beautiful surroundings and your vacation in Ranchi will be the most memorable one.

Well known for its educational facilities and boarding schools, Ranchi is also one of the business hubs of commercial and trade for Jharkhand. Ranchi has rich mineral deposits and mining is an important activity here. There are also extensive forests around Ranchi which have Sal, Kend, Mahua and other trees, and are the home to a many animals such as bear, chital, wild cats, wolves, leopard, and several smaller animals.

Tourism in Ranchi                                             

Hundru Falls, Jonha Falls, Dassam Falls and Panch Gagh Falls are the four major waterfalls around Ranchi.  Picturesque and stunning the falls are one of the major attractions of the area.

Hundru Falls is one of the most picturesque of the bunch and are often used as a favorite picnic spot and for swimming at the bottom of the falls.  Jonha Falls are also known as Gautamdhara the river Kanchi flows nearby and there is a rest room which contains a temple dedicated to Lord Buddha.  Dassam Falls culminate in a drop from 144 feet and are also known as Dassam Gagh.  Panch Gagh is probably the quaintest of the four, consisting of 5 streams, all of which fall from a good height.  All of these falls make great spots for photographs to be taken as keepsakes for years to come, and each waterfall has a nature of its own.

The People of Ranchi

The people of Ranchi depend largely upon the mineral industries for employment along with agriculture they are the main paths to livelihood.  Males and females work in almost equal numbers in cultivation while in the mineral industry this is nearly 5:1 in favor of males.

The education system is rather good in Ranchi and there is a close to 74% literacy rate with most being well educated.

There is a tribal population in Ranchi that is quite high with the main tribes being Munda and Oraon.  Hindi and English are spoken by many urban people and Mundari, Oraon, Nagpuri and Kurmali can be added to the mix.

The average diet for people in Ranchi consists of rice, pulses and millet. Vegetarian dishes are very common here but for the traveller the hotels in Ranchi do serve non vegetarian dishes along with continental dishes.

Congenital and friendly in disposition you will not find much trouble from the people in Ranchi and tourists on the whole usually find the people of Ranchi very cooperative.
