History of Almora                                        

According to a legend about 500 years ago, Raja Kalyan Chand was hunting in this region. The prey took a refuge in a wild think bush called as Kilmora and then the king was mesmerized by the site and decided to transfer his capital from Champawat to Almora. Almora remained a capital of Chand dynasty for more than a thousand years. Almora remained untouched and well protected naturally until the Gurkha onslaught in the later decade of 19th century.

Tourism in Almora

There are a number of tourist attractions in an around Almora. Almora is famous for its orchards. Nanda Devi Temple was the religious centre of Almora for many hundreds years and a visit to Almora would be incomplete without a visit to this temple. Lala Bazaar is a unique market which is more than two hundred years old and has stone paved streets. So if you would like to have a taste of yesteryear, make it a must in your travel itinerary. 

Tarikhet which lies few kilometres away from Almora was a hub of the Freedom Movement. Mahatma Gandhi also lived there for a while. There is also a “bright end corner” which is 2 kms away from Almora. The sunset and the sunrise seen through the Himalayan peaks is the highlight of this place.

Nearby is Vivekanand memorial where it is believed that Swami Vivekanand had stopped for a little while on his journey to the Himalayas.

Kausani, situated at a distance of 32 miles from  Almora, offers a breathtaking view of Himalayas and has an exquisite tea garden.
