Mizoram – Travel to Mizoram – Tour to Mizoram
Rainforest, India

In the southernmost slice of north eastern India lays Mizoram. Tranquil and evergreen this place just oozes charm.

The land of the Blue Mountains, evergreen forests, dense jungles, and intoxicating flora and fauna abound in this stunning landscape.  Amazingly lush rice paddies and beautiful rivers and waterfalls will steal your heart and run off with it.  Be careful for fear you may not get it back.

A Light History on Mizoram

There is not much of a recorded history for Mizoram however oral tradition states that the Mizos migrated to this area from their homeland in china close to three centuries ago. Settling in these remote hills they had found the greener pastures that they were looking for.  Annexed to Assam in the 19th century, Mizoram finally became a fully fledged state of the Indian Union in 1972.

The Church and the Westernization of Mizoram

From early in the 19th century the Christian Missionaries flocked to Mizoram and have played a great and dominating role in the affairs of the state.  In fact almost 86% of the entire population of Mizoram is some form of the Christian Religion. Presbyterian, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Salvation Army and many other denominations have a wide following here.  This has lead to a great westernization of the population and its social life.

Preserving Tradition

In recent history there has been a great effort by the young people of the state to hold on to their traditional culture.  By clinging to their traditional roots there has been an upsurge of vibrant ancient Mizo traditions which showcase a vibrant cultural heritage and amazing customs.

Tourism and culture in Mizoram

There are very few Indian faces in Mizoram; instead you will be delighted by a more predominantly Thai-Chinese style which reflects the history of the people.  Stunningly friendly do not be surprised if one or more people stop you in the street just to thank you for visiting.  Running entirely on a different track the business in Mizoram is often long shut by 6pm, likewise on a Sunday most everything is closed.

Mizoram does not run on the traditional western 3 meals a day system; instead it runs on a two meal a day system.  Zingchaw is the morning meal usually served from 9-10am and Tlaichaw is the afternoon meal served from 4-6pm.  Both feature rice, boiled leaves, boiled veggies and boiled smoked-pork on the side.  Surprisingly you may often come across a tipsy person despite the state being dry on paper.

There is no caste distinction within Mizoram and the women of the state are fairly liberal. In some areas it is not uncommon to find girls smoking openly, dating and wearing jeans- amongst other westernized fashion items.  Surprisingly the musical tastes of the state are rather varied with gospel, Megadeth and Avril Lavigne all popular.
