Amritsar – Travel to Amritsar – Tour to Amritsar
Golden Temple in Amritsar, India

Amritsar is home to the golden temple, Sikhism’s most holy shrine which is responsible for millions of pilgrims.

The serenity that can be found in this temple is in direct contrast to the streets here in Amritsar which are bordering on chaotic.  Locally Amritsar is known as the land of the saints, it is a very important pilgrimage place for Sikhs from across the entire world.

The city itself is based upon an extremely enduring work ethic and this becomes apparent through the show of wealth that is on full display in each of the towns, and villages in the area.

Blessed with a surrounding region that is incredibly fertile Amritsar is extremely well known for its agricultural production, but it also has a thriving chemical industry and is also well known for its textiles.  This may be in part attributed to the amount of cotton the region produces.

Tourism in Amritsar

Amritsar has a long and varied history, located in the north west of the state of Punjab has meant that Amritsar has seen itself continually act as the capital of the Sikh religion since some time in the 16th century.  The golden temple is by far the greatest attraction in the city although not the only attraction.  The Ram Bagh is some absolutely stunning gardens that have been named after the cities founding father.  The summer palace of the maharaja Ranjit Singh is also located here and has a museum that shows a brilliant exhibition of weapons dating right the way back to the time of the Mughal Empire.

Local Handcrafts in Amritsar

Tourists who travel to Amritsar will find themselves in a trance when it comes to the local handicraft which is breathtaking to say the least, the very unique Phulkari flower is found in the embroidery work here along with beautiful woolen carpets and shawls.  Tourists and visitors should also take some time out to check out the handcrafted furniture made here which can sometimes have ivory inlaid, as well as the intricately embroidered leather shoes known as Juttis.

Respect the local culture and Golden Temple

While on your tour to Amritsar you should always remain respectful towards the Sikh religion and the people who reside there especially near the Golden Temple complex.  It is worth noting that both men and women cover their heads while in the temple, because these are easily available to buy throughout the town or there is a box of them available for use at the entrance to the temple.  Smoking and drinking alcohol are forbidden within the temple as well as within sight of the temple complex, spitting will also draw unwanted attention. And lastly photography is allowed outside the ring of the holy lake but is not allowed within the actual temple.
