Due to its planned aspect the city of Chandigarh is often referred to as the city beautiful.

Chandigarh is a city that is situated within a union territory, that being it is directly governed by the central government but it is also the capital of two states Haryana and Punjab.  Serving as the capital of two states means that Chandigarh has many government officials. 

Due to its structure as a planned city it is designed by various architects and shows many examples of their work the most notable of which and the most often attributed is Le Corbusier. 

Tourism in Chandigarh

With its simple and clean cut lines it’s not such a surprise that there are many different gardens and parks that contribute to the natural beauty here.  In fact rather than obstruct this city has incorporated itself into the environment. SukhnaLlake has shore side shops and is a local hang out for anyone wanting to try out water sports like boating or canoeing during their tour to Chandigarh.  The Rose garden is a striking green setting with lush flower beds that are always in bloom with seasonal flowers and there is a small fountain here that is rather beautiful.

Much of Chandigarh is covered by dense plantations and forests.  Asoka, cassia, and mulberry are common and flourish here in the forest eco-system.  The forests that surround the city contain treks on which you will be able to see a lot of flora and have the chance to see some of the cities fauna.  Deer’s, Sambar, parrots, woodpeckers and peacocks inhabit these forests which are protected.  For a glimpse of some migratory birds Sukhna Lake hosts a wide variety of migratory birds in the winter season that come from as far away as Siberia and Japan, along with the usual ducks and geese. Don’t forget to visit Rock Garden – a garden without flowers and trees, but garden filled with figures made of industrial and household waste that represent animals and humans.

Shopping and economy in Chandigarh

Shopping here is brilliant and works well with the rigid sector structure that the city has, with sector 17 markets being rather famous.  The city has a well developed infrastructure and banking here will not be a problem as all of the Indian banks have offices here.  The colorful displays here are quite a sight so don’t get too distracted looking for a bargain.

Chandigarh being the capital of two states and a union territory means that many people here are employed by the government or retired.  Because of the large amount of retired government officials that live in the area Chandigarh has earned the reputation of being somewhat of a pensioner’s paradise.  Tourism is another economic boost to this region.  And industry is another with such important industries located here as paper making, basic metals, alloys and machinery and a large food industry.  Sanitary products, auto parts, tools, pharmaceuticals and electrical appliances also have a presence in this city. The booming business here has meant that Chandigarh has earned itself the reward of having the highest income per capita and is the richest city in India.
