Tourism is always strong in areas that have strong religious and historical background.

Ayodhya is definitely one of those areas that benefits from tourism due to its religious background.  Considered one of the most important Hindu and Buddhist destinations in India, it benefits from the arrival of thousands of pilgrims each year.  Due to this, more than just a number of places to stay have been established to provide temporary housing for both tourists and pilgrims.

History of Ayodhya

One of the early records regarding Ayodhya was made by a Chinese monk who documented that there were a number of Hindu temples in the area.  According to the epic Ramayana, this city was where the Lord Sri Rama, the seventh reincarnation of the Vishnu, was born.  The temples were preserved throughout the Mughal and British rule until India's independence.

Tourism in Ayodhya

There are several temples and sacred areas in Ayodhya that could be visited during a tour, such as:

The Hanuman Garhi – Easily the most popular shrine in Ayodhya, its main temple holds an impressive statue of Maa Anjani with Bal Hanuman seated on her lap.  To see this site, every tourist has to go through 76 steps.  The temple also has four walls around it, shaped similar to a fort.  Each corner plays host to another temple that may be added to the tour as well.

Nageshwarnath Temple – Both a love story and a tribute to the existence of the city, it is said that this temple was established by the son of Rama.  The story starts with his bathing in the Saryu and losing his armlet.  The lovely Nag-Kanya finds the armlet and returns it to him.  As she was a devotee of Shiva, Kush the son of Rama builds the temple for her.  It is said that this temple survived when the rest did not, and it was by way of the temple that the people found Ayodhya and restored the city back to life.  Tours don't just pass through the temple, but also visit other sacred areas in the vicinity.

Ayodhya is an important Indian city, and people may tour this place just to learn about the culture, or they may choose to learn about the religion as well.  Whichever they decide to do, the tourists would definitely agree that the travel to Ayodhya would be worth the time and money spent.
