History of Gorakhpur

The name of the city came from the ascetic saint Gorakshanath.  He, along with his teacher Matsyendranath, founded the Nath Sampradaya line of saints.  This story was what helped the area develop into a place of learning, and a lot of children would come here to learn from the different Sages that lived here.  Later on, the area also became an important area for the India Independence Movement.

Tourism in Gorakhpur

Just like every place of importance in the world. Gorakhpur has a lot to offer any tourist.  One of the best places to visit would be the Gita Press, which is considered to be the largest publisher that deals with Hindu religious texts.  When the builders created the publishing house, they did not want to create something that would just mean publishing.  Instead, they created a building that looked much like a temple, and then created a place just for show.  This is why the Gita press has an art gallery within it, showcasing more than three hundred works of art from different time periods.

Another location that should not be missed during a tour of Gorakhpur would be the Gorakhnath Temple.  This is where the saint Gorakshanath used to practice Hatha Yoga in order to attain self control.  Within the temple one would find a garbagriha that portrays the saint as Shiva, in deep meditation.  Close to the site, just east of the temple, is a pond that has been converted into a boating site for tourists and visitors.

To make this tour one that is fit for a family, several parks have been set up within the city.  In these parks visitors can have picnics and just enjoy the scenery.  One that may particularly interest the kids would be the Kusumi Vinod Van Park, which sports a small zoo with a collection of animals that would definitely delight children both young and old.

There are definitely a lot of things to do in Gorakhpur, and when one is done seeing the sites, one can definitely decide to just sit back and soak in the culture.  There are a number of cinemas in the city, and watching an Indian movie or two would definitely be a fun way to pass the time.  Indian food is also good, and tours of Gorakhpur would definitely give visitors an idea as to where to go to get excellent samples of Indian cuisine.

Whether to relax or to learn, a tour of Gorakhpur would definitely be one great way to spend a vacation.
