A small pocket of land exists as the state of Haryana, split from Punjab in 1966. Haryana is less visited than its neighbor but shares a capital with it; Chandigarh. Most famous for its holy site of Kurukshetra which is important to Hindus and is a place where good triumphed over evil, you just know Haryana is going to hold some significance for others too. Haryana is an ideal place for pilgrimages with Kurukshetra, Jyotisar, Thanesar, Pehova and Panchkula as some of the famous pilgrim spots located in Haryana. It is also the perfect place to enjoy some adventure sports such as para sailing, rock climbing, river-rafting and canoeing. It also houses many amusement and Theme Parks to help entertain the kids, or the kid at heart. The adrenaline rush you can get here is second to none, and adrenaline junkies will find they just have to have another fix. Haryana History Haryana has a proudly far reaching history. The state was the home of the legendary Bharata dynasty. Haryana is immortalised in the great epic Mahabharata where Kurukshetra; the scene of the epic battle between the Kaurvas and the Pandavas, is situated in Haryana. The state has played a leading role in the history of India until the advent of Muslims and the rise of Delhi as the imperial capital of India. After this Haryana played the role of a silent partner to Delhi and practically remained anonymous till the first war of India's Independence in 1857, when the people of Haryana joined the leaders of Indian revolt against the British Government. A primarily Hindu state, Haryana was split from the Sikh state of Punjab in 1966. Haryana is dominated by its suburban and commercial cityscape what is left of the sate is a largely agrarian affair with little to get in the way of a tourist on a mission to elsewhere in India. A majority of the population is involved in agriculture and wheat is the major crop produced here, while another large sector is dairy farming. Haryana and its Highway Tourism Haryana is also known for its innovative highway tourism: along the main arteries in the state are some popular and well occupied hotels. Quiet in the tourism arena until relatively recently Haryana pioneered its way into this field with its highway tourism. Making the best of the presence of national highways that crossed through it, there was a collective decision to cater to the highway traveller. Once this was all decided upon the infrastructure was put into place on the national highways. It opened recreation centres at district headquarter towns to cater to the local residents. With a well established infrastructure, it soon began to develop destination stations around Delhi-the National Capital and began to identify places of tourist interest in the State where tourism facilities could be developed. With all this in place Haryana is starting to shake off its previous image as a non-descript state and is slowly coming into the spot light with more tourist friendly infrastructure popping up state wide. |
