History of Nagarhole National Park Park derives its name from two words: “naga” meaning snake and “hole” meaning stream. Nagarhole National Park is situated to the northwest of Bandipur National Park and stretches on 640 square kilometers. Together with other nearby national parks it forms one of the biggest wildlife protected area in the world. It has been nominated as UNESCO World Heritage site. Indian government realizes the importance of this place, both as natural habitat and tourist destination, and right now it works on moving local tribe population in order to keep flora and fauna intact for the future generations. Tourism in Nagarhole National Park Thanks to its rich wildife and good management, park is extremely popular tourist destination. The park is opened all year long, cause of the mild temperatures even during winter, but it is better to go there during the summer, whatsoever. This means from November to May, as in the rest of the year it is the rainy season in Nagarhole. Flora and Fauna in Nagarhole National Park Thick forest covers most of the park area, and forest vegetation varies from tropical in the south part of the park where humidity and temperature are higher, to dry in eastern part of the park. Nagarhole National Park, as its name claims, is home to many reptile species such as Indian rock python, vine snake, bamboo viper and rat snake. As for the predators, inside the park there are large numbers of wild dogs, jackals, hyenas, and sloth bears. Nagarhole is one of the best places to see elephants in their natural environment, together with barking deer, chital (spotted deer), antelope, wild pig and giant squirrel. Also, they have a big population of other endangered species such as tigers and leopards. Park also has more then 270 species of birds, and some of them are flagged as critically endangered (Oriental backed vulture, spotted eagle and Nilgiri wood pigeon). Nagarhole is the best holiday destination, as it is a complete place suited for every tourist. Adventurous tourists could attend safaris and forest trips, while other people might relax and take sunbaths. The children could learn some useful ecology lessons, and you could also try some traditional Indian foods. |
