Bekal - “a small town on the eastern shore of Kerala“ is an enthralling beautiful place for tourists.

Bekal is derived from the word Baliakulam, meaning Big palace . It lies 12 kms south of Kasargod town. The more you expect from Bekal, the more you will enjoy its back water, beaches, and the serene view of the sea.  No wonder it is known as the mini – paradise in Kerala.

It is Sivappa Nayak , who build this fort around 1650.  According to Bekal history, this fort was constructed in order to defend it from the outside world. Finally in 1956 Kasargod became a part of Kerala .

History of Bekal

Bekal was a part of Mahodayapuram during the Perumal Age. The reign changed hands during the 12th century AD following the political decline of the Mahodayapuram Perumals. During this period it came under the sovereignty of the Kolathiries and served as a port of significant maritime importance. Later during the Battle of Thalikkottai in 1565, the Nayaks annexed Bekal and made it the nucleus of their exploits in the Malabar region. Later it came under the rule of Tipu Sultan but with his matrydom it fell into the hands of the East India Company and gradually its political and economic significance as a port city declined.
