One of the most mystical places in India is Bhadrachalam, it is a place where religion and history have met, like many of India’s important cities, and Bhadrachalam is built up around an important temple and carries a name that signifies importance.  Situated in Andhra Pradesh, the temple that this town is centered upon was built in 1630.

Bhadrachalam is a famous pilgrim shrine situated on the bank of river Godavari which is considered holy.  Here you will find an amazing insight into the way towns in India combine century’s old traditions and the modern way of living.  Not only does Bhadrachalam take in many of pilgrims each years but it is also the home of ITC PSPD which is one of the premier paper manufacturers in the world.  The Bhadrachalam Rama Temple is the main temple complex here in Bhadrachalam and the home of the Lord Sri Ram.  There are also smaller temples for other gods and goddesses. Temples of Lord Shiva and Narasimha are quite close by as well.

History of the Bhadrachalam Temple

The temple was built in 1630AD by a man of the name of Ramadas. Ramadas were a tax revenue collector at the time. He collected money from people to build the temple but was stalled part way through when there was not enough money.  When the collections were not sufficient, he used tax collections and was jailed for 12 years for doing so by the king at the time. When the devotees Sri Ram and his brother Laxmana heard of Ramanas Plight they repaid the money to the king and Ramanas was released.  It is this sense of devotion that keeps the temple so alive in spirit still today as it was when it was first completed.

A little quiet reflection in the beautiful surroundings could leave you feeling refreshed. The atmosphere can change though, especially during the days of the festival of of Ramnavmi, the place reflects a different energy, filled with devotion and religious zeal.
