History of Bidar

Bidar is a historical town whose story goes back in time to the days of the Bahamani Kingdom of 1347-1526, prior to which it was part of the Chalukyan empire in the 10th century. It was in this district that Mayurkhandi, the first Rashtrakuta capital, was present. The succession of rulers who took over Bidar and ruled it are in the pages of history, and it is this history that gets re-written as you set foot on its soil.

Another spot that you surely should visit on a trip to Bidar is the Solar Kambh Masjid. This is a 16 pillared mosque, and is the one of the largest in India. This is the oldest piece of Muslim architecture in Bidar. A visit to the Mahmud Gawan Madarsa will let you have a glimpse into the past in the form of colourful Islamic mosaic work decorating its walls. The glorious past of this monument is seen in the form of the blue-glazed tiles and walls with excerpts from the Q’uaran engraved on them in calligraphic style.

Other places of interest are the Royal Pavillion, the Gagan Mahal, Takhat Mahal, Diwan-e-Am and the Rangin Mahal which was once the royal abode. You will be able to enjoy some excellent Persian artwork and intricately carved pillars within the Rangin Mahal.
