History of Hospet

Hospet was a very prominent city in one of the most famous empires in South India, the Vijayanagar Empire. The emperor Krishnadeva Raya built Hospet following the death of his mother and named it Nagalapura. It later came to be known as HosaPete or the New City. The remains of this once strong kingdom can be found even today in Hospet.

For the tourists to Hospet, the charismatic town of Chitradurga is an important stopover. Enclosed in a sequence of seven walls, the fort is renowned for its military architecture.  The Chitradurga Fort is nestled in the midst of audacious rocky hills and striking valleys with soaring boulders. Harihar is an ancient town situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra. It is believed that a dip in the river will purify the soul and wash away the sins since there is thought to be a spiritual correlation between Lord Vishnu and the Tungabhadra River. This temple was built in the Hoysala style of architecture in the year 1223.

For students of history, another interesting stopover is the Archaeological Museum. The museum houses several war memorabilia, coins and manuscripts.

Jogimatti is one of the tallest peaks in this area. On the way to Jogimatti one can witness the breathtaking view of the Himavat Kedaya waterfall. An effervescent picnic spot with its unflappable ambience this place is surely worth the visit.
