Vijayawada, renowned for the largest railway junction of South India, situated on the banks of Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh.

The City of Victory - Vijayawada surrounded by the Indrakiladri hills on its west and Budameru River on its north is a prominent city for commerce, off lately it has blossomed into a popular tourist destination, which offers exquisite churches and temples, caves, museums and 1000 m long Prakasam Barrage, comprising both rail track and road.

History of Vijayawada

Vijayawada was inhabited since the Stone Age, as the artifacts recovered from the banks Machilipatnam and Nagarjuna Sagar Rivers. When Buddhism was at its zenith, the famous Chinese traveller Hsuan-Tsang visited Vijayawada in 639 AD.

The Eastern Ganga Dynasty Kings - Choda Gangadeva and Ananga Bhimadeva re-captured the Andhra region in 12th century. They marched up to River Godavari but could not cross it. It is here they established a town “Vijaya Bahuda” that is today knows as Vijayawada.

During the British Raj the city experienced exponential growth. Post Independence the construction of the Prakasam Barrage was successfully completed in 1959.

Today, the city holds a prime relevance in the agricultural and commercial sectors.

Tourism in Vijayawada

Flourishing on the banks of Krishna River, Vijayawada, also known as “Bezawada” offers several points of interest including Kondapalli Fort, Victoria Jubilee Regional Museum, Prakasam Barrage,Gunadala konda and Kanaka Durga Temple.

Kondapalli Fort is located 16 Km away from Vijayawada in the Kondapalli village. Built in the 7th century by King Krishna Deva Raya, the fort served as a business centre and eventually a military training base during the British rule. Constructed on the hill with a three-storied rock tower, today it is a popular picnic spot amongst locales.

The Museum of the Archaeology, Victoria Jubilee Regional Museum is located on Bandar Road and displays exquisite exhibits in the form of sculptures and paintings, Buddha Alluru inscriptions from the 1st & 2nd centuries and Mahishasura Mardhani.

Prakasham Barrage is a popular point of interest with its three canals running across the city to provide water for irrigation. This gives Vijayawada a Venetian look. Built in 1957, this barrage connects Guntur District with the city, while offering panoramic view of river Krishna and the surroundings.

Gunadala konda is the famous Catholic Church located on the eastern side of Vijayawada. During the month of February, “Mary Maatha Ustavaalu”, festival dedicated to mother Mary is celebrated, here. Every year huge gatherings flock at the Church premises to pray and worship.

At a distance of 8-km from Vijayawada lies the Undavalli caves. The elevated hill surmounting the river Krishna offers fine specimens of cut-in architectural and sculptural models.

Tired of tours, relax at the picturesque Bhavani Island, located upstream the river Krishna. It offers splendid picnic spot for vacationers.

The presiding deity of Vijayawada - Kanaka Durga, goddess of power, riches and benevolence, has been regarded as self-manifested and powerful goddess. Therefore, the temple on the Indrakiladri hill is devoted to her.
