Fort Aguada & Condolim

Fort Aguada & Candolim – Travel to Fort Aguada & Condolim – Tour to Fort Aguada & Condolim
Fort Aguada, Goa, India

There would be no better vacation than the one spent on a romantic fort beside a clean beach.

This is exactly what Candolim beach has to offer.  Clean sand and blue water, cool breezes at any time during the day, terrific views of the ocean and the sunset; these are what lay in and wait for every traveler who visits Candolim.  The romantic touch of a fort makes this the perfect getaway for newlyweds and families alike.

History of Fort Aguada and Candolim

The beach has been around since the world started, and it has always been beautiful.  The fort though, named Fort Aguada, was built by the Portuguese in the early 1600s to defend this territory against the Dutch and other invaders.  Along with the defenses that were built was a lighthouse which stands until this day.  The lighthouse was a good sign for friendly ships as the fort also held a spring and was able to provide water for those who passed by, hence the name Aguada, coming from the word “agua” which means water in Portuguese.

Tourism in Fort Aguada & Candolim

Few people visit the 7 km stretch of land that is known as Candolim beach.  Since this is the case, the area is considered to be a vacation spot for elite tourists.  Both the water and the sand are clean, and the area is well maintained by the business operators who offer the usual services to tourists.  These services include swimming gear rentals, as well as boat rentals, adventure tours and trips for spotting wildlife such as dolphins and other animals.

Another main attraction would be Fort Aguada, now maintained well and turned into a beach resort.  The ruins are still present, and tours of the fort could be scheduled very easily.  Considering that this fort was built in the 1600s, any tourist would marvel at the architecture of the place.  The lighthouse within the fort offers awesome views of the ocean, and still intact within is a water tank that could hold up to ten million liters of fresh water.  For a more gruesome picture, one could visit the basement which was a prison when the fort was still active.  This, interestingly, is still the largest in the Indian state of Goa.

For those who want to see a little more history during their visit to Fort Aguada, there is the church of St. Lawrence nearby.  It is actually advised that a tour of this place be taken as the church itself was built during the 1600s as well, just a few years after the fort was finished.  From the sea, only two things are visible on land.  One is the lighthouse in the fort, the other is the Church of St. Lawrence.

Every vacation and tour is meant to be relaxing and memorable.  If it is decided that the precious days off will be spent touring Fort Aguada and Candolim, then two feelings would definitely come out at the end of the visit.  One would be joy, as the visit would definitely be enjoyed, while the other would be sadness because one would always hate to leave a place that is as beautiful as Fort Aguada and Candolim.  Still, it shouldn't be a problem because one can always go back.
