Bundi Place, India

Bundi is distinguished city with unexplored rich historical wealth which offers an exceptional vacation to tourists.

Bundi is situated in Rajasthan, the land of deserts. It offers a rich confluence of culture, architecture and nature. This picturesque location is engulfed on three sides by the imposing Aravalli hills and is confined by a massive wall with four gateways. It is named after a former king known as Bunda Meena.

The city hosts an array of impressive medieval forts, palaces, and temples with beautiful stone idols and chattris. The beautiful lake in the heart of the city further lends further credence to Bundi. The city is also famous for its intricate carvings and murals.

History of Bundi

During the battle between Prithviraj Chauhan and Sultan Mohammed Ghauri in 1193 A.D., the Chauhan’s were defeated. Consequently few noblemen sought shelter in Mewar and joined hands with  the Rana of Mewar, while others fled to the Chambal valley and conquered the Meena and Bhil tribes, establishing their own kingdom of Hadoti. Later, the Hadas disintegrated into two separate states - Kota and Bundi on either side of the river Chambal.

Akin to the other Rajputana states, a thirst for power and resultant conflict has marred the history of Bundi. The only significant difference being that the state of Bundi had cordial relationship with the Mughal Empire unlike the other Rajputana states.

Rao Raja Bishan Singh in 1804 made a grave mistake by supporting Colonel Monson in his retreat before Holkar which turned out to be a disaster. This did not augur well for him and the Marathas and Pindaris sought revenge by plundering the city of Bundi several times between the years 1804 to 1817.  Finally in 1818 Bishan Singh sought protection under the British East India Company. Eventually when India was granted independence in 1947, Bundi became a part of the Dominion of India.
