When touring a foreign land, people are mesmerized by stories of courage and valor done in that area. In Chittorgarh, tourists will never run out of heroic stories. That is because Chittorgarh is the symbol values that the members of the Indian warrior caste (known as the Chattari Rajput) would like to embody. Not only are there stories of victory, but also of sacrifice and grace in defeat. History of Chittorgarh The land of Chittorgarh has been conquered and recaptured a number of times throughout its history. Though it has been besieged a number of times, one of the most notable stories would be the attack of the Pathan King Ala-ud-din Khilji who wanted to capture the queen of the land for himself. His army was so strong that he was able to defeat the defending army. When this happened, the ladies of the court, choosing death over dishonor, committed Jauhar (the burning of one's self by jumping into a huge fire). Tourism in Chittorgarh The primary place a tourist should visit in Chittorgarh would be the well known Chittorgarh Fort, which stands on top of a 180 meter hill. It spans a stunning 700 acres, and is said to be able to sustain the needs of a whole army for over a year due to the number of bodies of water located within the fort. Other locations that tours should include within the Fort would be the following: Victory Tower – a tower that shoots 120 feet into the air, it proclaims the victory of the city when it was besieged by its neighbors way back in 1440. Tours of Chittorgarh would include this as the tower is heavily ornamented, and would leave any tourist with a feeling of awe. Padmini Palace – medieval stories are not interesting unless they have romance and tragedy intertwined. This is the palace where the beautiful queen led her ladies in waiting into the fire just to get away from dishonor. No tour of Chittorgarh would be complete if it does not visit this palace that reflects the unmatched beauty of Queen Padmini. Tour to Chittorgarh has much to offer all its visitors. No visit will be considered unfruitful, and every tourist will leave with a sense of satisfaction because of the cultural exchange, the knowledge gained and the awesome relaxation experience. |
