History of Vagator and Chapora

Vagator and Chapora are two small fishing villages that has been a centre of wild parties and backpackers. This popular tourist destination offers a unique opportunity to observe the rural life of Goa. The women in their traditional attire can be seen pawning fish by the roadside.

The Chapora Fort occupies an important historic reminiscence. Built in 1617 the fort was an important part of the Portuguese political aspiration. Trying to end the Portuguese rule in Goa, Akbar joined hands with the Marathas in 1683 and erected his base camp here, converting the fort as the northern outpost of the Old conquests.

Vagator is a younger beach as compared to Anjuna, and holds trance parties.

Tourism in Vagator & Chapora

Chapora Fort is medieval Portuguese fort, built in 1617 on the rocky peninsula. The fort sitting pretty on the lava bedecked black rock for the past 500 years, distinguishes Chapora and Vagator. Reaching the top of the fort offers splendid view of the sea and hills covered with coconut trees and rice fields.

Visiting the rural village in Chapora is a thing of beauty. You can watch the fishermen in their small boats sail on the salty water with their nets filled with variety of fishes. When the boats are lying idle, they become the playing instrument for village kids. The tiny cottages with beautiful gardens are a rare countryside view in India.

The water lapping against the seashore, changing colours from aquamarine to sea emerald and the tiny cottages with colours of purple, fuchsia and lemon spread across the gardens undoubtedly offers newlyweds a honeymoon fantasy.

Thanks to an unknown visitor, who has carved out a human face on the rocks, making it an ideal backdrop for snapshots.

In this popular rural area, tourists can shop for artifacts like candelabras made of delicate blue china, woven baskets and earthen pots. If you have a sweet tooth, bite into Bebinca, a Goan delicacy prepared from banana and coconut. Fish is readily available both in the village and in the local market nearby.

Vagator and Chapora do not offer many choices as far as accommodation go, especially during peak tourist season. We at wildplanettours.com recommend Calangute and Baga as better bets.
