Veraval, 6km from Junagadh, Gujarat, is an eminent fishing port. And, famous for building all types of boats by hand. Verval earlier a fortified port town of Junagadh’s royal family; today is a distinguished fishing port, and the base for visiting the Hindu pilgrimage centre of Somnath. History of Veraval Veraval, discovered in the 13th century by Rao Veravalji Vadher, was a fortified port town of the royal family of Junagadh, until its merger into the Indian district in 1953. Even today, the town bears the imprints of the ancient Nawabi heritage. The Nawabi Palace with gothic features has been converted into Somnath College, after it was abandoned by the nawab. Before the rise of Surat, Veraval was the main seaport for pilgrims to Mecca. Today, it is an important fishing port where visitors can watch dhows and fishing boats being made with hands. Additionally, Veraval holds a religious significance with Somnath Temple standing in its close proximity, and Pandav gufa located at a distance of 25 km. Tourism in Veraval Veraval spectacular points of interest include fishing port, Nawab's palace, Somnath Temple, Junagadh gate and the legendry Bhalka Tirth. The intricately carved Junagadh gate and Patan gate add magnificence to the city. These gates are the entry points to Somnath Temple. The Prabhas Patan Museum constructed from an old mosque, which in turn was constructed from Hindu temples, make the museum far more interesting than its exhibits. It opens from 8.30 am-12.15 pm and 2.30-6.15 pm, Wednesday, 2nd and 4th Saturdays remains closed. The famous Gir National Park is at a distance of 42 km from Veraval. It is the home to the Asiatic Lions and most protected area in Asia due to its supported species.
