Less that 500sq km in size just means that you shouldn’t underestimate this union territory. Surrounded by gorgeous tall stands of trees, meandering rivers that entice, rich tribal culture, and truly beautifully mannered people who are both hospitable and kind there is not much in this tiny area that people won’t enjoy. Dadra is the headquarters of Dadra taluka, comprising Dadra town along with two other villages. Silvassa is the headquarters of Nagar Haveli taluka, comprising Silvassa town and 68 other villages. A Checkered Past for Dadra and Nagar Haveli Formerly of Portuguese India this quiet enclave consists of 72 villages. The Portuguese were masters of several areas of India, and this particular area for about 150 years. Dadra and Nagar Haveli were originally given to Portugal as a compensation for the sinking of a Portuguese ship by the Maratha navy. However that changed in July of 1954 when the Indian Nationalists freed Dadra and Nagar Haveli and a pro-Indian administration was introduced. Later in 1961 Dadra and Nagar Haveli became a union territory. A Pleasing Atmosphere Due to Dadra and Nagar Haveli being in such close proximity to the sea the area enjoys a wonderfully moderate temperature all year round. It can be somewhat warm and humid in the summer months, but not as hot as tropical India which is a welcoming change. Beware of the south west monsoon which brings with it much rain for the area. Economy in Dadra and Nagar Haveli The major economy in this union territory comes from the manufacturing industry. All economy here is given a large boost due to the territory not imposing a sales tax or duties. Agriculture is also a large contributor here with the major crops being Ragi, Wheat, Sugarcane, and Paddy, Pulses, mangoes and Litchi. The major industries are in textiles, engineering, chemicals, electronics and cottage industries which go hand in hand with the tourism industry. Tourism in Dadra and Nagar Haveli Dadra and Nagar Haveli are dubbed a land for all seasons, thanks mostly to their amicable weather. The area enjoys stunning scenery. There are several tourist spots in and around the main areas of Dadra and Nagar Haveli but the absolute highlights would have to be the children’s park in Silvassa along with a few stunning temples like Ram temple and Balaji temple. There is a wonderful tribal museum for anyone with an interest in the local culture, which thanks to the mixed history of the area is colourful and vibrant and not to mention interesting. Van Dhara Garden and Hirva Van Garden are both near a river and will make for a relaxing day for people who may wish to take along a picnic while Vanganga Garden is located in the village of Dadra. Dadra and Nagar Haveli are a brilliant area to relax a few days away in. Keep to yourself or get to know the locals. This small area has a lot to explore and something for everyone. |
