One of India’s largest states is Maharashtra which boasts that it is India’s third largest by size and second largest by population. This also means that Maharashtra is home to India’s most industrialized area which is known as the Mumbai - Pune Belt.  Agriculturally Maharashtra is a well irrigated and advanced although the northern and eastern reaches lag behind the western front in this respect.

Local Culture in Maharashtra

Like other states Maharashtra has its own folk music.  There is an audible difference within the preferences of the urban and rural populations with Gondhal, Lavani, Bharud and Powada being especially popular in the rural communities.  The musical preferences in the urban areas can lean towards the more common forms that are found in Hindi and Marathi with the film industry playing a huge part in influencing these people.  Even more influential in the cultural arena here in Maharashtra however is “Bollywood” which is located in the city of Mumbai, and plays a major influence far outreaching this city’s boundaries.

The people of Maharashtra

Reflecting the diversity of this state is the culture, the geography and the people.  Most importantly the people here reflect such a great amalgamation of different tribes, religions and ethnicities.  You will find Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Buddhist, Zoroastrians, Christians and Sikhs, who all co-existing in a surprisingly peaceful day to day existence.  As with much of India the people of Maharashtra can be extremely friendly and show a great tendency to be overly hospitable, the only danger here may be the lack of will to leave.

On the Deccan plateau within Maharashtra the population comprises mainly of tribal groups.  The main tribal groups in Maharashtra are the Bhils, Mahadeo Kolis, Gonds, and Warlis.  Once moving towards the north-western coast of the state you are likely to come across the later that live simple lives and worship nature.  They believe that death and destruction come to the human race simply because of the deep disrespect that humans have shown to our planet over the millennia.
