History of Konkan

The history of Konkan spans over centuries, with the earliest records mentioning Arabian refugees taking shelter in this coastal district.

Since these earliest Muslim settlers, Konkan has evolved into a melting pot of various groups of settlers such as the Brahims and the English in recent years. It also bears the astute military vision of the Maratha warrior Shivaji who built strong forts at strategic locations, reflecting Konkan’s importance in defending the Maharashtra coastline.

Tourism in Konkan

Beach getaways

This coastal district of Konkan has no lack of options for some relaxation in the sun, sea and the sand,  be it for a short tour or longer travel period. The numerous beaches with sun-kissed sand dotting the coast allow tourists can choose to travel to any convenient beach to suit their preferences. Revdanda presents a scenic sight of the port and the beach. Stroll to the nearby beach will reward the beach buffs with a magnificent sight of the Revdanda Fort built by the Portuguese in 1558. The uncrowded beach of Diveagar, the Shilahars’ ancient capital, with crystal clear waters can be found behind the Ganpati Temple. The beach at Kelshi, a cosy Konkani village, is secluded with superb sand dunes for children to spend endless hours playing slide. Untouched by tourist hotels, visitors can opt for the unique experience of homestay with the locals at Kelshi.

Other popular and undiscovered travel spots can be found at these beaches- Hedvi boasts of a gorge, at Baman Ghal, formed by the explosive waves on the rocks where high tide can form water columns soaring high to 100ft tall. Ramehwar or Kolwadi beach, Ratnagiri, Guhagar, Nivati and Arevare are among the many more clean and wonderful beaches at Konkan.

Forts

Forts are found in every district of Konkan, the east coastal region of India. Janjira, a magnificent sea fort at the Raigad district stands proud for remaining unconquered throughout the battle periods. It has excellent fort architecture and the external walls remain in good condition, unlike the ruined internal premises. The derelict internal state does not diminish its triumphant past in any way especially with the three huge cannons - Kalal Bangdi, Landa Kasam and Chavri still standing strong and proud.

The Kolai fort is a Portuguese outpost used to guard the river entrance. There is a lighthouse at the fort premises. Despite the fort’s ruined state, the lighthouse presents a beautiful view. Other forta in Raigad includes Kuda, Pali, Ambivli and Sav among the others.

There are beautiful lakes and breathtaking waterfalls to explore in Konkan. A tour to this coastal district will definitely refresh any weary traveller.
