A thriving port. Zamorins’ capital and landing point of Vasco De Gamma.
Kozhikode, also known by its romanized name, Calicut, has a long history entwined with trade. History Of Kozhikode Trade and commerce has been the lifeblood for the Malabar coastal district of Kozhikode. Once ruled by the Zamorins who had established the city of Kozhikode after a long fight with the King of Polatthiri. Records show the beginning signs of the city existence in 13th century AD, though it was part of the Cheran dynasty long before these records. The rise of Kozhikode was the primary cause of the increasing suzerainty of Zamorin who had welcomed the famous Portuguese Vasco De Gamma, but had to contend with numerous plots of the European alliance with the Cochin ruler to overthrow the existing rulers. Kozhikode’s prominence was mainly due to its strategic role in the trade sea route to India as discovered by the European explorers during their travel across the oceans. It also became the preferred trading port for the Arabian and Chinese settlers. The increasing trade and wealth also mean it was the target of many wanting to seize control of this lucrative port of call which saw much bloodshed among the Portuguese and the Zamorins. Other European colonial powers including the Dutch tried to claim their stake on Kozhikode for centuries, until the British asserted their power in India. In 1957, Kozhikode became part of the Kerala state. Tourism in Kozhikode There are endless tour options in Kozhikode and a variety of activities to keep any traveller busy.
