Lahaul and Spiti are popularly known as the twin valleys in the Himchal Pradesh, along the Tibet border. Both spectacularly beautiful, yet it may not be accurate to call them twins. Their individual allure is unique and their beauty could not be more contrasting to one another. Lahaul’s barren terrains are refreshing juxtapose to Spiti’s scant vegetation.

History of Lahaul and Spiti

Lahaul and Spiti were two distinct districts with different origins and rulers. They used to form part of the Kangra district of Punjab. It was only in 1960; the two mountain tracts were merged and brought under the administration of Himchal Pradesh.

Tourism in Lahaul and Spiti

The travel up to Lahaul and Spiti can be a remarkable journey in no man’s land.

Surrounded by snow capped mountain peaks contrasting against the clear blue skies, the quiet ride or trek is a prelude to the tranquil scenes waiting in the valley. While trekkers are attracted to the demanding terrains and nature lovers to the spectacular sights, Lahaul and Spiti are well known for the Buddhist monasteries.

Monasteries

The most remarkable monastery, possibly in the world, is the Tabo monastery in Spiti. It is millenium old and while the design looks 1000 years of age - minimal and plain, the interior have been well preserved. The vibrant frescoes in the prayer hall and the various paintings of the Buddha incarnations and Tibetan deities add a touch of colour to the ancient structure. While the monastery stands strong and silent, the daily monastery routines take place in another newer building next to the temple complex. Other monasteries included in most tours are Guru Ghantal Monastery, Kardang Monastery, among many more and Dhankar Monastery in Dhankar village, a most pretty place in Spiti.

Trek Trails and Lakes

Darcha at altitude of 3360m is considered ideal for trekkers with camping facilities along the way. Baralacha La is popular tourists destination for trekkers. The starting point of this trek pass is also the origin of the three rivers- Chandra, Bhaga and Yunam. There are many other trek trails to challenge tourists and reward their efforts with magnificent scenery. The Chandra Tal Lake located at an elevation of 4300 m is the source of river Chandra. Surrounded by snowy whiteness and rich green grass nearby, this river is formed by melted glaciers. The other famous lakes in the valleys are Sural Tal Lake and Dashir Lake, which supposed can cure ailments with the water’s healing properties.
