Panaji – Travel to Panaji – Tour to Panaji
The religious monument, India

An ideal place to take a vacation would be where one would have access to everything.

Panaji, the capital of the state of Goa in India, offers exactly this.  From historical sites , wonderful beaches to peaceful and scenic areas, the area will provide access to anything that a tourist would want.  Even food will not be a problem as the local delicacies are extremely good.

History of Panaji

The town used to be composed of a landing stage, a custom's house and a hilltop fort.  Difficulties were experienced in old Goa and so in 1843, when the people left the old city due to the plague, so the Portuguese did their best to spruce up the old town.  They drained the marshes in the area and built awesome structures, hoping to recreate the glory of the previous capital.  Though they weren't entirely successful, the city was given the name “New Goa”, and was made state capital when Goa was made into a state.

Tourism in Panaji

With the number of places to visit in Panaji, the city has been facing the increasing number of tourists each year.  The common areas for tourists to stay at and visit are the two main beaches close to Panaji, namely Miramar beach and Dona Paula.  The former is where most folk go, and is known for its scenic views and soft, golden sand.  The latter is a bit farther than Miramar, but is more popular as a number of Bollywood films have been shot on this beach.

Leading the tourist spot of historic sites would be the “Old City” or the “Old Goa”.  Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, it lies 9km away from Panaji and attracts most of the people who visit Panaji.  A full day's tour would provide visitors with a lot of information regarding the lifestyle of the people during the Portuguese colonization.  The architecture of the buildings in the old city would also amaze any tourist, as these styles would have been difficult to create in the earlier centuries.

There are islands just across the river from Panaji, and these may be reached via car ferry.  Here is where people may not tour, but just drive around, enjoy the views and meditate in utter peacefulness.  Places of such serenity are hard to find in the world, but there is a lot to spare on the islands beside Panaji.

The Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is also near the city, and may be accessed by car or bus.  From October to March, migratory birds that come from as far as Siberia are seen here.  Before visiting this place though, one should stock up with mosquito repellant.  The area is warm, and the bugs are plentiful, which makes it the feasting place of birds.

Panaji has a lot to offer any person who wishes to travel to India.  It is easily accessible, provides jump off points for other areas, and has more than just a number of places to stay and dine.  This is one of the choice spots for a perfect tour and vacation in India.
