The difficulty in visiting a reserve lies in the fact that one may not see any animals at all.

This is not so when visiting the Pench Tiger Reserve.  With the number of cats that are within the reservation as well as the length of the tour programs that they have, it's impossible to leave this area without seeing any of the beautiful wild cats that live there.

History of the Pench Tiger Reserve

The British noticed the wildlife in this area as early as the 17^th century.  From then, they took it upon themselves to visit and document the wildlife in the area. Its beauty was so notable that the author Rudyard Kipling used the location for his novel “The Jungle Book”. 

Indiscriminate destruction of the area was done also from the early 17^th century, but this was changed when the place was declared a sanctuary on September 1977.  The Pench Park was developed half a decade later.  Its success as a tourist attraction can be attributed to the Pench River that runs through the park itself.  As water gives life to the animals, most prey is found near the river, which subsequently calls the predators to the area.

The park is located in the southern region of Madhya Pradesh, India and is connected to an all-weather road to most of the important cities in the state.  The nearest city would be Nagpur, which houses both a rail-head and an airport.  Most people would use this city as the jump off point to Pench Tiger Reserve, although the reserve itself has three major entrances.

Tourism in Pench Tiger Reserve

The park closes from July to the middle of October as the rainy season is not the best time to visit the park.  Once it opens though, there are daily trips in and out of the park.  Tourists can go with the regular safaris that are made just for tourism, while there is also the option to bring in your own vehicle.  This is allowed only if accompanied by an authorized guide.

A lot of animals are within the reserve, many of them part of the list of endangered species.  Among all that are there, the cats are most impressive, lead by the leopards and tigers.  This particular park is the best place in India to see leopards.  It also boasts of more than 200 bird species as well as an assortment of other predators rarely seen outside the wild.

Travel to Pench Tiger Reserve would be one of the most rewarding vacations that anyone could ever take.  This is not the type of place that is visited for a day or two.  Allocate two weeks to soak up nature.  It would also be good to bring a good bit of cash along as these are not exactly inexpensive.  With the amount of memories that this trip would generate though, it would definitely be worth it.  The excitement experienced and the wonders witnessed would make all the work and planning worthwhile.
