Porbandar - Travel to Porbandar – Tour to Porbandar
Cooking, India

For some reason, coastal towns have a mysterious appeal that takes hold of most people.

As if the coastal appeal was not enough, the city of Porbandar also has the colorful culture that is natural to all Indian cities.  With sites to see and the perfect climate, the city of Porbandar is the perfect place to travel during your tour to India.

History of Porbandar

Archeological findings show that this location was already in use from as early as 1600 BC.  There is no documentation of the culture that used this area until the time of the Jethwa Rajputs at around 1600 AD.  The town, just like most Indian towns of its time, was fortified and had heavy defenses.  The walls were torn down during the British rule though, and now only the town stands.  It still holds a lot of historical significance, and one fact that will never be forgotten is that this is where Mahatma Gandhi was born.

Tourism in Porbandar

One need not leave the city to see the amazing tourist attractions. Right in the city is the Huzoor Palace, which stretches over a considerable amount of land.  The structure obviously reflects certain European influences in its design, and is noticeably modern for its time.  It zigzags across the grounds leaving in its wake several spaces for gardens and fountains, all of which were taken advantage of.

Any Indian city would be incomplete without a temple, and this city is definitely complete.  In the early 1900s, the construction of the Krishna-Sudama temple was begun, and this construction was for the childhood friend of lord Krishna.  It is said that the funds of the temple were depleted during the construction and the people decided to hold plays in order to raise more funds.

There is also the white Manu temple that is within the city or Porbandar.  It is dedicated to a powerful goddess who is responsible for the rains in the area.  A large swing is at the bottom of the stairs that lead up to the temple, and legend has it that the sister of the goddess visits the temple every once in a while.  When this happens, both swing at steps by the temple.  No one sees the divine figures, but the swing moves.

Bird lovers would also appreciate this area as flocks of flamingos are readily visible at the coastal marshes.  This is one of the areas where one can get close to these beautiful birds.  And when one gets tired of looking at these birds, then there is the bird sanctuary named Kuchdi, some twenty minutes away from the city.  Be sure to bring spare batteries for the camera when visiting this spot, as there are unlimited photo opportunities available here.

Porbandar is an ancient city that has continued to develop throughout the years.  It is taken care of by the people due to its significance, and it will continue to be developed and visited by people for years to come.  For those who wish to travel and see places of historical value in India, in a relaxed environment, this is the place to go.
