An epicenter for Saivism, Thiruvannamali is considered an ancient and venerable spiritual destination in South India. The word Tiruvannamalai traces its roots to two words namely ‘Tiru’ and ‘Annamalai’. ‘Tiru’ is a word used to denote greatness while ‘Annamalai’ translates to an inaccessible mountain. History of Tiruvannamalai The Cholas were amongst the earliest rulers of Tiruvannamalai. This was followed by a brief period of rule by the Pandyas during the 13th century. The Vijayanagar Empire established its supremacy between the 14th to the 17th century AD and they were succeeded by the Nayaks. As is the case with other parts of India, this was followed by the British Raj till the nation ultimately gained independence in 1947. Tourism in Tiruvannamalai Tiruvannamalai is made famous owing to its importance as a pilgrim centre. Hinduism recognizes 5 places as embodiments of the five elements of nature. They are more popularly termed as the Pancha Bootha Sthalangal. Tiruvannamalai represents the fire while Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Thirvanaikoil and Sri Kalahasti represent earth, sky, water and air respectively. A good time to visit would be in November or December. Look out for the dates which coincide with the Tamil month Karthikai since during this time you can witness the ten day Brahmotsavam. The Arunachala temple on the hill requires some special mention. Adorned by imposing gopurams this temple was constructed during the Chola rule between 9th and 10th century AD. The temple complex is a massive structure surrounded by strong fortified walls. The East Rajagopuram is especially attractive with 11 tiered towers accounting for its height of 217 feet. Tiruvannamalai is also made famous owing to the presence of many ashrams. Sri Seshadri Swamigal Ashram, Sri Ramana Ashram and Yogi Ram Surathkumar Ashram are all located here. You can also mix your travel itinery by penciling in a visit to the Sathanur dam. Built in 1958 across the Pennaiyar river, this dam boasts of a crocodile farm, a zoo, parks and a swimming pool. Another natural retreat is the Jawadhu Hills. 75 kms from Tiruvannamalai these hills apart from offering picturesque scenery also have close on their heels some other places of interest such as Amirthi Forest, Beema Falls and Komutteri Lake.
